The history behind the art of archery and where it all began!
Archery is among one of the earliest and oldest arts that’s still practiced today. The evolution of archery stretches back to the beginning of humankind’s history, and evidence of ancient archery has been discovered worldwide.
Let’s look at the history of archery and the evolution from where it began to where it is now.
The History of Archery
While archery most likely has its roots around 20,000 years ago, the earliest and most documented use of archery was around 3000 BCE by the Ancient Egyptians for hunting and warfare.

There is evidence of archery in Ancient China during the Shang Dynasty. A war chariot was discovered, which carried a three-person team, including a driver, archer, and lancer. While nobles at court regularly attended archery tournaments, which included food, entertainment, and music.
Chinese people then introduced Japan to archery in the sixth century, which significantly impacted their culture at the time. One of Japan’s most well-known martial arts, called initially Kyujustsu (the art of the bow), now known as Kyudo (the way of the bow), is still practiced today. Modern Kyudo is primarily used to track physical, spiritual, and moral development.
During the Greco-Roman period, hunters using bows and archers in warfare were frequently displayed on pottery.
European countries weren’t the only ones mastering archery. Assyrians and Parthians perfected using horseback bows, adding movement and speed to archery warfare. Attila the Hun and his horde of Mongols conquered most of Europe and Asia thanks to their fast horses and skilled horseback archers, while the Turkish used their archers to halt the Crusaders in their tracks.
The English transformed the bow concept into the formidable longbow, using it to deadly effect at the famous battles of Agincourt and Crécy. The English understood the importance of the longbow so much that they introduced a law where every man of adult age was required to practice archery every Sunday. The law is still in place to this day but not enforced.
Gunpowder Changed the World of Archery
Between the 10th and 13th centuries, the introduction and spread of gunpowder, cannons, and firearms essentially relegated the role of archers in armed conflicts to the past. However, that wasn’t the end of archery.
The sport of archery and archery, in general, still holds a prominent position in popular culture and the history of cultures worldwide.
Archery and Its Role In Popular Culture, Hunting, and Sport
Archery features strongly in folklore.
One of the most famous archers is Robin Hood. Robin Hood and his band of followers were based in Nottingham Forest, robbing the rich local Lords and giving to the poor.

In more modern times, archers are featured strongly in movies, including The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Hunger Games.
The 1900 Olympic Games were the first to feature archery. However, it returned in 1094, 1908, and 1920 before being omitted for over 52 years until the 1972 Olympics, where it returned to the schedule. Since then, archery has remained on the program, including men’s, women’s, and team events.
Archery was first introduced at the Paralympic Games in 1960 and has been included in every Paralympics since, with both men’s and women’s competitions.
These days, archery is still a widely practiced part of hunting, with designated hunting seasons for bow hunters in various countries worldwide, including the United States.
